GRP Grating Applications

GRP and FRP gratings are used for walkways, platforms and removable access flooring in many working environments. The same panel is not suitable for every application. Use the settings below to prepare your requirements, then select the resin, mesh, finish, thickness, supports and fixings together.

Water and wastewater treatment

Walkways beside tanks, pump platforms and maintenance access routes may face persistent moisture, splash and treatment chemicals. Identify whether exposure is occasional or continuous and list the actual chemicals and temperatures. Check the complete span and fixing arrangement, access to valves and the method for lifting removable panels. Open mesh helps drainage but is not a substitute for containment or a watertight tank cover.

Chemical and process areas

Floors around dosing equipment and process lines need an exposure assessment before material selection. Include cleaning products as well as the normal process fluid; mixtures can behave differently from individual chemicals. Consider splash zones, ventilation, drainage and nearby hot surfaces. Resin guidance is a starting point for review, not a blanket promise that every GRP grade withstands the plant environment.

Manufacturing and maintenance platforms

Machine access, service walkways and work platforms often require cut-outs, removable sections and coordination with handrails. Provide the supporting frame drawing, panel orientation and any concentrated loads from tools or equipment. Vehicle routes and heavy wheeled loads require specific engineering review. A standard pedestrian grating should not be selected for forklift traffic merely because a similar panel appears in an industrial photograph.

Marine access and outdoor walkways

Salt spray, sunlight and wet footwear influence coastal selection. Assess the resin and exterior protection, water exposure, fixing materials and the walking-surface requirements. For a jetty or exposed platform, include uplift, wave action and the supporting structure in the design. A corrosion-resistant panel does not establish the capacity or weather resistance of the entire installation.

Food, beverage and washdown areas

Grating can provide access above wet floors and drainage routes, but hygiene requirements must be defined for the exact use. Check cleaning chemicals, inspectable joints, debris traps and what lies beneath the openings. Direct food contact, drinking-water contact or a specified hygienic certification requires relevant product evidence; these properties should never be inferred from the general term fibreglass.

Roof and solar-panel maintenance routes

Dedicated access walkways can help organise maintenance movement between roof equipment. Before selecting a panel, review roof capacity, support positions, waterproofing, wind uplift and safe access requirements. The grating is only one part of that arrangement. Drawings should distinguish the walking route from fragile roof areas and identify the guardrails or other access provisions needed by the project.

Prepare an application enquiry

Send dimensions and clear spans, quantities, site photographs or drawings, destination, operating conditions and relevant specifications. Identify pedestrian or wheeled access, maintenance removal needs and any fire or chemical requirement. Start with a standard, mini or rectangular mesh family, or ask NA-ME to help narrow the options before requesting a quotation.
