Replacing corroded metal handrails

An illustrative maintenance scenario: a painted steel walkway railing shows corrosion, while a GRP profile railing is considered for renewal. This example concerns pedestrian handrails and guardrails.

The maintenance problem

Moisture, repeated washdown and local chemical exposure can damage the coating on a metal railing. Rust can develop around welds, joints and the post bases; local deterioration may extend beyond a surface-painting issue. Inspect the existing railing and its anchors before deciding which parts require renewal.

The illustration compares a corroded metal railing with a yellow railing made from GRP profiles. It is a visual selection scenario, not a documented customer installation or a measured before-and-after result.

A GRP railing option

Pultruded GRP profiles can be considered for posts, top rails and intermediate rails where the selected material suits the environment. The glass-fibre and resin body does not develop iron rust. Resin, finish, weather exposure and the metal components used at connections still need to be reviewed for the project.

Specify the complete railing

Treat the railing as an assembled system. Its performance depends on the profiles, layout, joints, base fixings and the substrate. Matching the dimensions of an old steel member does not establish equivalent performance.

Confirm the required guardrail height, post spacing, loading and deflection criteria with the responsible project designer. Review corners, stairs, removable sections and toe boards where required. No load rating, compliance certificate or service-life figure is claimed for the pictured illustration.

Discuss your handrail project

Send the railing layout, photographs, total length, corners and access openings, installation location and exposure conditions. Include the required colour, quantities and delivery destination. NA-ME can review the profile options and information needed to prepare a quotation.
