GRP grating fire performance: reading the evidence
A useful fire requirement names the performance needed and the test or assessment used to demonstrate it. Terms such as fire-retardant or low-smoke need supporting context; they do not by themselves establish that a grating is suitable for a particular location.
Define the question before requesting a certificate
Begin with the project’s fire strategy and the grating’s role. Is the requirement concerned with contribution to fire, smoke, evacuation or continued structural function? An external maintenance platform and an enclosed escape route may raise different questions. State the installation context and the specified criteria so the supplier can identify whether relevant evidence exists for the proposed product.
Avoid an undefined request for a fire certificate. It can produce a document that answers a different question from the one the project needs resolved. Ask the responsible designer or reviewer to identify the required method, classification and conditions when the specification is unclear. Doing so before product selection makes it possible to compare proposals consistently and prevents a marketing phrase from becoming an accidental performance requirement.
Keep different fire measures separate
Surface burning, smoke production and structural performance in fire are distinct subjects. ASTM’s description of E84 concerns comparative surface flame spread and smoke measurements under specified conditions. It also explains that a flame-spread result alone does not classify a material as noncombustible. This is why a favourable surface result must not be translated into a fire-resistance duration or an unlimited safety claim.
The table provides a way to organise a document request. It does not assign any result to NA-ME grating. Where the project uses a different test framework, retain that framework’s definitions rather than replacing them with a superficially similar label.

Connect evidence to the exact construction
A report needs to be identifiable with the proposed product. Review the resin system, thickness or height, surface construction and other relevant specimen details. Check whether coatings, grit layers, facings or support arrangements affect the scope. If the offered product differs, ask how the evidence applies instead of assuming that similar appearance makes the difference immaterial.
A resin supplier’s information can inform a discussion, but it is not automatically a result for finished grating. The composite contains reinforcement and may contain additives or a surface treatment. Keep the distinction visible in the submission. If only general material information is available, label it accordingly and resolve the missing product evidence through the project review. Do not fill the gap by citing a result from another manufacturer’s product or by treating all products in a resin family as interchangeable.
Read the test conditions and limitations
Look beyond the headline result to the method, specimen description and stated limitations. Identify what was measured and under which exposure. A test is a controlled assessment, and its relationship to a real installation depends on the applicable framework and the reviewer’s requirements. The result should be used for the question it addresses, not extended to every possible fire scenario.
Different test systems should not be converted into each other without a recognised basis. A label used in one market may resemble another while referring to a different procedure. Preserve the full standard reference and result when requesting a quotation. If the project accepts alternatives, make that an explicit review decision rather than an informal substitution by procurement. Also confirm whether any additional smoke, toxicity or structural requirement remains outstanding after the surface-burning evidence has been considered.
Consider the installed system
The grating sits within a structure and an operating environment. Supports, fixings, adjacent materials and escape arrangements may matter to the fire strategy. Product evidence should therefore be assessed alongside the installation rather than used to describe the entire platform. A statement about the panel alone does not establish the behaviour of every component supporting it.
Describe any unusual exposure or operational requirement early. If the grating is intended to remain functional during a defined event, that is a specific requirement to put to the designer and supplier. It cannot be inferred from normal-temperature load information. Likewise, a chemical or outdoor-use selection should still be checked against fire requirements; material choices that address one service need do not automatically resolve another. Keep a list of the separate criteria so a successful review in one area does not hide an unanswered question elsewhere.
Request a complete and honest technical submission
For a NA-ME enquiry, provide the product configuration, dimensions, intended location, required fire method and acceptance criteria. State any documentation format needed by the project reviewer. Ask the supplier to identify which requirements the available evidence addresses and where further review is necessary. This page makes no product fire classification or certification claim for the NA-ME range.
Management-system certificates belong in a different part of the submission. ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 address management systems and cannot substitute for fire-test evidence. Keep the final accepted product description and supporting documents with the order. If a resin, surface or assembly is changed later, revisit the fire review before treating the replacement as equivalent. That simple document discipline helps keep the product delivered to site aligned with the one that was assessed.
