Anti-slip GRP grating surfaces

A grating surface should be selected for the conditions people will actually encounter. Texture is one factor; contamination, footwear, cleaning, wear and the surrounding access route also influence slip risk.

Begin with the route and the users

Describe the task before choosing a surface. Is the grating part of a routine walkway, a maintenance platform, a wet process area or a route used only occasionally? Record footwear, carried loads, direction changes and any transitions onto another floor. These details help the project team assess what the surface must do rather than choosing from an appearance or a generic anti-slip label.

Include who uses the route and under what conditions. An industrial maintenance team and visitors may use different footwear and move differently. Do not assume that a surface accepted for one setting automatically suits another. If the route has an accessibility requirement, identify it explicitly and review the complete geometry. Surface texture does not answer questions about openings, changes in level or whether wheels and walking aids can cross the grating comfortably.

Distinguish texture from measured performance

GRP grating can be supplied with different surface constructions, including moulded textures and applied grit in the wider market. Confirm the finish available for the selected NA-ME product rather than assuming every finish is offered on every panel. A photograph can help identify appearance, but it does not establish a slip-test result or show how the surface will behave after use.

If a project requires evidence, state the test method and conditions. Ask whether the result represents the proposed surface and whether it was obtained dry, wet or with a relevant contaminant. Check specimen condition and direction where those are part of the method. Avoid combining results from different methods into a single ranking unless a competent reviewer has established that the comparison is valid.

Make contamination part of the specification

HSE identifies contamination as a major factor in slips. For a grating enquiry, describe rain, wash water, oil, dust and process residue separately. A surface that drains liquid can still retain material on its contact areas. Open mesh therefore does not eliminate the need to understand what reaches the walking surface and how it is removed.

Think about the source as well as the floor. A leak, splash point or route carrying material from another area may need controls beyond surface selection. Identify where contamination accumulates, how quickly it is noticed and who cleans it. These are operating questions, but they affect whether a chosen surface will remain suitable. A test on a clean sample should not be represented as evidence for a floor covered in a different substance during everyday use.

Coordinate mesh, edges and drainage

Mesh is a geometric choice as well as an appearance. Confirm the actual clear opening when small heels, tools, wheels or other objects matter. A nominal mesh description does not by itself establish suitability for a particular user group. Consider the support and panel layout so the route is not interrupted by awkward joints or unexpected changes in level.

Drainage should be assessed as a system. Check where liquid goes after passing through the grating and whether deposits can build beneath it. Include the surrounding floor so runoff does not create a wet transition at an entrance or landing. If solid-top or other special arrangements are being considered, describe the drainage requirement explicitly. Do not select a finish in isolation and discover later that the chosen assembly changes cleaning access or retains the contaminant it was intended to manage.

Plan cleaning and inspection before handover

Ask for a cleaning method compatible with the resin and surface. State the cleaning chemicals and temperatures during material selection, rather than treating them as an operational detail to decide later. The method should remove deposits without introducing an unreviewed chemical exposure or damaging the surface. Access for cleaning also matters: removable panels and the space beneath them need a practical maintenance arrangement.

Inspection should look for changes such as worn texture, deposits, damage, loose panels and uneven transitions. The appropriate frequency depends on use and conditions; this guide does not prescribe a universal interval. Record observations and respond to recurring contamination rather than repeatedly restoring the same short-lived condition. Where slip performance is critical or the surface has changed substantially, seek an appropriate assessment instead of assuming the original sample result remains representative.

Write a surface enquiry that can be answered

Include product dimensions, mesh, surface preference, users, footwear and the expected contaminants. State any specified test method and acceptance requirement without inventing a result for the product. Add cleaning conditions and whether the area is indoors, outdoors or exposed intermittently. A supplier can then identify the available finish and the documentation relevant to it.

For an existing route, describe the problem precisely: where slips or near misses occur, when the floor is contaminated and whether the issue is local or widespread. Do not assume surface replacement is the only useful action. The project team may need to review drainage, cleaning, transitions and operating practices together.
