GRP resin systems: a practical selection guide

The resin is a central part of a GRP product specification. Selecting it requires more than choosing a familiar material name: the service environment, reinforcement, surface and performance requirements must be considered together.

Start with the operating conditions

GRP means glass-reinforced plastic; FRP is the wider term for fibre-reinforced plastic. In a glass-fibre composite, reinforcement and resin work together. A resin family can be useful for an initial discussion, but it does not identify every ingredient, additive or manufacturing detail in the finished grating. Two products described simply as polyester may therefore require different evidence for the same application.

Build the enquiry around the process rather than a preferred label. Describe where the panel sits, what may reach its upper and lower surfaces, how long exposure lasts and what happens during cleaning or maintenance. Include normal operation and foreseeable departures such as a spill, a hot wash or a shutdown. These details let the supplier assess a material for the conditions that actually matter. If the process is still being designed, distinguish confirmed requirements from assumptions so they can be revisited before order approval.

Understand family names without treating them as ratings

Polyester and vinyl ester appear in NA-ME’s public description of composite materials. Wider industry literature also discusses other systems, including phenolic resin, for particular requirements. Mention of a resin in this guide does not mean every NA-ME product is available in that formulation. Availability and suitability must be confirmed for the exact product.

A useful comparison asks what evidence a candidate formulation can provide. An unfamiliar formulation with relevant documentation may be a stronger basis for review than a familiar name accompanied only by a general claim. Equally, a material selected for chemical exposure should not be assumed to meet a fire requirement without separate evidence. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed system in the quotation and explain how it addresses the stated environment.

Describe chemicals as an exposure schedule

A chemical list becomes much more useful when each entry includes concentration, temperature, frequency and duration. Specify whether exposure is vapour, splash, repeated wetting or continuous contact. Include the underside of a grating above a tank; it may experience a different environment from the walking surface. Where substances mix, provide the mixture rather than assuming each ingredient can be reviewed separately.

Cleaning is part of service. Record the cleaning agent, dilution and application temperature, together with rinsing and any period of pooling. If the cleaner changes later, revisit the material selection. For an uncertain process, ask what additional information or representative evaluation would help. Do not convert a resistance statement for one manufacturer’s product into an approval of another product carrying the same broad resin description. The relevant reference is the formulation and finished construction proposed for your order.

Resolve temperature and fire questions separately

State continuous temperature and short-duration peaks independently. A brief hot contact and an elevated background temperature present different review questions. Explain whether loading continues while the product is hot and whether temperature varies repeatedly. Avoid copying a published temperature for a generic resin into a project specification without its conditions and limitations.

Fire requirements should name the required method, acceptance criteria and installation context. A description such as fire-retardant resin does not establish a fire-resistance period for a walkway. Surface burning, smoke and structural behaviour in fire are different questions. If the project has several requirements, list each rather than combining them into an undefined request for fire certification. This makes gaps visible early and prevents a favourable result in one test being used as a substitute for another.

Include the finished product and its interfaces

The chosen resin belongs in a complete specification with product code, height, mesh, surface and colour where relevant. Include cut edges, drilled holes and any site fabrication that may require an agreed finishing method. Fixings, support members and surrounding materials also encounter the environment, so review them alongside the panel. A successful resin choice cannot correct a connection made from an unsuitable material.

For a replacement, record the identity of the installed product if available and describe observed deterioration without assuming its cause. Discolouration, exposed fibres, surface wear and mechanical damage can have different explanations. Photographs and operating history can help a technical discussion, but a visual resemblance is not a reliable identification of resin. Where the original specification is unknown, treat the replacement as a fresh selection using the current operating conditions.

Document a reviewable selection

A practical decision record can be short: application, exposure schedule, proposed product and resin, evidence reviewed, open questions and the person responsible for accepting the choice. Keep the supplier’s response with the project documents and carry the agreed material description into the order. When the process, cleaning regime or installation changes, the record makes it easier to see which assumptions need reassessment.
